Sports The 2016 Summer Paralympics are held in Rio a few weeks after the regular Summer Olympics.

The dictionary defines the Paralympics as: "The Paralympic Games is a major international multi-sport event involving athletes with a range of disabilities, including impaired muscle power (e.g. paraplegia and quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome, spina bifida), impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency (e.g. amputation or dysmelia), ..."

What are some character traits you think these Paralympians need to have in order to participate in these games? How is it different than characteristics for the regular Olympic games? How are they the same? What events would you want to watch? see events here.

  1. I think that paralympians have to have bravery, perseverance, strength, courage, and not be afraid to be disabled on national TV. These traits are different than in the regular olympic games, because the regular olympians don't need to be as courageous, because they can be seen as more ¨normal¨ people, because they are not disabled, and haven't gone through their lives being seen as a freak. The traits are the same because they both need to have perseverance to get through the olympic training. They both need to be brave to compete in the global stage in the olympics. I would want to watch the olympic swimming because I am a swimmer myself and like to see what the pros look like, and I would want to watch the paralympic road racing because it looks really cool.

  2. The Paralympics is almost just like the Olympics a competition for people who enjoy and are good at sports. Except for one thing these people competed have disabilities so they made a Olympics that are fair for even people with disabilities. This is good because people in wheelchairs can play rugby and basketball just like everybody else people with prosthetic legs can do track like everyone else and they don't even have a disadvantage! I have watched these games and I think they're are more enjoyable then the Olympics this is why I enjoy the Paralympics

    1. I think it's great that people with disabilities get to compete in a special Olympics just for them!

    2. I also think that this is kind of not nice becausethey are getting treated differently, but I understand that it is good they get something just for them that makes it easier and more fair.

    3. I think that the Paralympics athletes should be able to train with regular Olympians.

    4. When I watch the Paralympics I'm more impressed than the regular Olympics.

  3. Some of the character traits a competitor needs in the Paralympics is courage, endurance and self confidence. These traits are different from the competitors in the Olympics because in the Paralympics you need self confidence that if even though you don’t think you can do it you have to keep trying. But in the Olympics you don't need to worry about that because you know you have a fair chance. The events that I would like to see are wheelchair fencing, archery and table tennis.

    1. I agree, Paralympians need a lot of self confidence to compete because they might not have as fair of a chance as some other competitors might.

    2. I agree, in the Paralympics because if you are playing basketball in a wheelchair you could easy miss a shot

  4. I think they have to have perseverance because they have to know that in order to do this because it wont be as easy to have artificial legs and arms it would be harder to keep them straight than regular legs. To run in them I think it is a little easier to the people with two instead of one because they don't use as much energy because the artificial legs don't use as much energy. If you have one artificial leg then one legs is still using a lot of energy.

    1. I think the same thing they are going o have to train hard to get muscle in their body because they have to train just like the other Olympians.

    2. I agree. I think that track in the Paralympics is ten times harder in the regular Olympics.

  5. I think that they obviously have to be disabled, to be in the paralympics, but they also must have bravery and perseverance. It must be very hard to play basketball in a wheelchair! They also must be brave to even train how to do these things; just like any paralympian or olympian. These are different because any olympian can train hard enough to do the olympics, but paralympians must train even harder because they must learn how to turn and go fast in a wheelchair, and paralympians who want to do track must learn balance and not to lep/bounce too far and fall on their face. They are the same because every single athlete must train and not give up. I would like to watch swimming, equestrian, sailing, volleyball, archery, and powerlifting.

  6. Some characteristics that a Paralympic athlete must have are perseverance, self-confidence, and courage. These athletes must have these characteristics because they must have been self-conscious all their life or when they got their disability. The olympics is a very big deal to to be in it with a disability is very awesome! They need perseverance to keep pushes forward and keep trying even if someone has made fun of them or they don't think they are good enough. They need courage because they are going out and doing a sport in front of a lot of people with something that they feel self-conscious about. They are amazing athletes. Two event that I would like to see is, swimming and paratriathlon.

    1. I totally agree, Maiti! It is a big deal to show the entire world what you can do! They definitely need courage inside them to be able to do something like that in front of that large of a crowd. When something goes wrong, they just keep moving forward as best as they can, just like anyone would if they were in that situation or a situation similar.

  7. The paralympics is a sporting event in which athletes with disabilities can participate in.The need lots of self confidence, courage, and perseverance. They need self confidence because it takes a lot of hard work to recover from an injury.I assume that lots of people doubt the athletes. They have to have pretty tough skin to be able to believe in themselves. They need to have courage; courage to be able to get on that field and risk themselves of another injury. The need courage to fight through the thousands of hours of training. Finally they need to persevere through the last seconds, the last push up, the last race.To make it into the Olimpics you have to persevere, have self confidence, and courage. The Olimpics and pararlipyics are two different things, yet they have oodles in common! They both have the same sports.Such as Gymnastics,Javelin, and Tennis.Second, they both occur the same year. For example. The Paralympics and Olympics both are 2016.Lastly, they both have countries from around the world;such as USA,Italy, and Germany. They are very different. The Paralympics have disabled athletes, whereas the Olympics have regular athletes. The Paralympics goes on at a different time then the Olympics. Finally,The Paralympics has tools to help the athletes,as opposed to the Olympics where they have more of the people using their body to compete.I would like to see swimming,Gymnastics, and cycling.Because they seem difficult to do disabled

  8. The Paralympics is an Olympics, in which athletes with disabilities can participate in. I think that Paralympics need to have self confidence, determination, and sedulity. These characteristics are different from the regular Olympian characteristics, because the regular olympians’ body’s work perfectly fine. They are the same because all of these qualities make you a strong, hard-working, and determined athlete. I would want to watch track, swimming, and wheelchair tennis, because these sports would be hard if you had disabilities.

  9. Some character traits I think these Paralympians need to have in order to participate are Bravery, Believing, and Perseverance.

I think that bravery is needed because they must be willing to get hurt again after they already have a disability. If they get hurt it is going to be worse than if a normal olympics person got hurt because they already have disabilities and it is going to hurt more probably. It is different than characteristics for the regular Olympic games because you will have to have more bravery than if you were a regular olympian. They are the same because to be any sort of olympian, you need to believe that you can win and also you will need to keep trying and trying until you achieve what you want to achieve I would want to watch the Wheelchair fencing, track because I think that the fake legs are interesting, and 5 or 7 a side football.

  10. Some traits you need is courage, bravery, and strength. You need courage because something bad has happened to you and it could happen again in the Paralympics. These are different than the original olympics because you haven't been through countless surgeries when in the Paralympics that has happened to everyone competing. Also, you would need to train twice as much to be in the Paralympics because it is more hard to play volleyball in a wheelchair than if you are playing standing up with having a disability. Some traits that would be the same is determination. Both need determination because if you don’t you wouldn’t get any medals. But, if you have determination you will probably get a medal.

  12. I think some of the traits the Paralympians need to possess is strength, determination, and bravery. Obviously, to be in the Olympics, you need to be strong, but to be a Paralympian, you need to specially train to be able to be able to run, jump, of whatever you need to do when you don’t have both your legs or whatever. You also need determination because it is really hard to train with a prosthetic leg or in a wheelchair. You need to be strong, and you need to practice a lot more than the typical person. You also need bravery. Things can go terribly wrong sometimes. You can trip and snap a metal piece in a leg or arm, or you could fall. But you need to make it through that when you’re a Paralympian. You also need to be brave to stand on the podium with a gold medal and be an inspiration to disabled people everywhere.

The Paralympics are different from the normal Olympics because it is more challenging. People with disorders or other things compete to become a legend. Is it the first person to be a track runner with epilepsy, or a shooter without any arms, the Paralympics are just as special as the regular Olympics, or maybe more. You also train more, because it is harder to do your sport as a Paralympian than an Olympian. Also, it is the same because I mean it’s the Olympics, everyone gets excited for that. The Paralympics is the same. You compete in sports, you try to win, you want to inspire people everywhere. The sport ability of people is insane, and especially the Paralympians.

I would really like to watch the Archery and Swimming sports because they are my favorite in the Olympics, and what’s better than the same thing but with more challenge? I also like the track, because you have to run, and it is fun to watch someone with one or both legs prosthetic be faster than you can run yourself.

  13. Some traits I think the paralympians need to have to participate in these events are courage, perseverance, and faith. I think they need them because, if they didn’t have them, then it would be very hard for them to keep trying and always hope for the good, and to know that they can do it. They’re different from the characteristics in the other olympic games because in the other olympic games, you have all of your own body parts, so you know where everything is going to go and you can’t lose control. Some activities I would like to see in the olympics are paratriathlon, volleyball, and gymnastics.

  14. I think some character traits that you would need to be in the paralympics are daring, courage, bravery, cunning, and won’t be afraid to go on TV and compete with a disability it won’t humiliate them. Some people probably compete because they think they can beat some regular olympians by competing. They are in my opinion more brave than any olympians that compete in the regular olympics because they compete in many of the same sports as regular olympians and they do it with disabilities that will be seen on national TV also having the courage to go out into the world and compete with disabilities.

As a paralympian I believe that you need to be, brave, courageous, and accepting towards other opinions. Theses paralympians have to deal with people saying that they can’t do anything everyday, they must also be courageous and brave in order to believe that they can do anything in the Olympics. One of the sports that I would like to see in the Paralympics is archery. I would enjoy seeing this sport because, normally archery involves the uses of your whole body.

  16. The people that participate in the paralympics need a lot of courage and a growth mind set. One event I would want to watch is swimming because I think it would be hard to swim with out a limb and I would like to see them take on challenges. You need more self confidence to be in the Paralympics rather than the regular Olympics because it is harder and I would not want to be disabled and be on TV.

  17. I think the paralympians will need to be extremely athletic so their disabilities don't have the biggest effect ever on them. I would probably watch the track and field because it's amazing knowing that if you have a “fake leg” you can still achieve stuff that seems impossible! The para olympics are different from the normal olympics because they have people with no arms swimming, they have extraordinary people with no legs playing basketball, and to me that's awesome.

  18. To be in the Paralympics you have to have courage, strength, and some sort of disability or an artificial limb that you either weren't born with or somehow lost one (or all) of your normal ones. The Paralympics are different from your standard Olympics, the sports that the competetitors play are either slightly or highly modified from the origional. But they are still the same because they need their strength and determination to push them through for a medal.

  19. Most definitely the Paralympics athletes that are competing need to have sort of problem or problems including impaired muscle power (e.g. paraplegia and quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome, spina bifida etc) to participate. I think that somethings that the athletes might need is courage a growth mindset and strength along with a smart strategy.

    1. I completely agree with this because it basically means that Paralympic athletes have to be as or more strong than Olympic athletes, which means they have to be very strong and have a lot of perseverance mentally and physically.

  21. To be in the Paralympics, you would have to be very confident and strong mentally and physically. You would also have to be yourself. If you weren’t doing that, it wouldn’t be the same. Everybody knows the saying just be yourself. That’s exactly what you need to do. That’s exactly what everyone needs to do. Just be themselves. The athletes in the Paralympics have gone through a lot. All of that would build up being strong mentally. Bad things sometimes make you stronger. And, everyone is strong physically, just in different ways. You are strong in different subjects. These athletes are strong in doing their sport. Firefighters are strong because they can lift a lot of heavy things, but also the calls that they go on make them stronger. They are very strong about fighting for success. Yoga teachers are strong in knowing about zen-like things. They know how to hold hard poses, like crow. They build up their success by being themselves. Same with firefighters. You just be yourself and be strong in the way that you are. These characteristics are different from the regular Olympics because the athletes that participate in the Paralympics because the athletes in the Olympics haven’t had the same things happen to them in their lifetime. They might not have lost a leg, or a limb, or been diagnosed with a wretched disease. Their characteristics are the same because they all enjoy playing the sport that they love, and they are all working on figuring themselves out. You find new things out about yourself each and everyday. We are all human. Humans figure things out, together or apart. We help each other, and we also learn some new character trait about ourselves. I would like to watch swimming, volleyball, tennis, and football 5-a-side because I looked at their meaning in wikipedia and I saw that they were very appealing to me.

  22. These paralympics athletes need courage, perseverance, and strength. They need all of these because they want to play all of these sports. If they want to play all of these sports, they need the perseverance to do that. These are different than regular athletes because they need to practice more. They need to practice more because it is way harder to do the n a regular sporting event. They are a little bit the same because they have to do the same sports as regular athletes. I want to watch all of the events because I want to see what they are going through. Also I want to watch the wheelchair basketball because they have to wheel themselves around, not run around like regular people do.

  23. People that participate in the paralympics have a lot of bravery and perseverance because they are people that have injured themselves and got back up. They have a lot of bravery because they have lost a/some limb(s) and got rid of being afraid. Another reason of why they have bravery is because if they were in the olympics before the paralympics are much more hard or challenging. Paralympics is more challenging because the people who do it have suffered from an injury have to regain their strength and that would probably take about a year or so, maybe more.

I think when a paralympian stands up on the podium they should be really proud because they earned it because all the effort they put into it.

I would like to watch swimming because I like to swim and it would be really fun to watch a paralympic swim, and I like watching people swim and sometimes use their techniques when I swim. This is why I think the paralympics have a lot of bravery and perseverance.

  24. I think that some of the characteristics are that you have to be a wounded soldier or somebody with a disability. I guess that you don’t have to be a wounded soldier you could have just been somebody who was wounded. I think that This is different from the other olympics because you are probably doing special events that they don’t do in the normal olympics. They are the same because they are still probably doing 100 meter sprints, hurdles and a lot of track. I would want to watch 100 meter hurdle and maybe something else.

  25. The Paralympics are a series of sporting events in which people with disabilities compete in Olympic events with other disabled competitors. Some character traits of the Paralympians are probably that they have to be strong, I mean, their disabled, that means that they kind of have to be strong to live after an accident or diseases like most Paralympians have. Also, they have to be brave, to compete in a world championship like that, disabled or not, it would take a lot of courage, and a synonym for courage is bravery. The last character trait I will list is perseverance. To be able to practice and practice, on top of being disabled, on top of being rejected by people so many times since their disability, it would take a lot of perseverance just to live through that never mind train and compete in Olympic events (I know it is a Paralympic event, but they are just Olympic events for the disabled).

  26. Some character traits I think these Paralympians need to have in order to participate in these games are disability, strength, will, and spirit. I think these traits are necessary for Paralympians because they need disability because that's why they made this event. Second, I think they need strength to participate because they need to be strong to push through. After that, I think paralympians need will because they need to decide to actually do it. Finally, I think the Paralympians need spirit. I think this because they need to want to win and do their best if they want to be a Paralympian. This is different from the regular olympians because the regular Olympians don’t have an issue holding them back. They are the same because they both have to work hard to win. The events that I would want to watch are swimming and archery. I would want to watch these events because I would like to see how they would swim in swimming and I would like to see how they would shoot in archery. This is what makes the Paralympics different from the regular Olympics.

  27. I think that you would need these characteristics to compete in the Paralympians game would be perservierance, bravery, and believing.
But,in the Olympion game I think you would need to be very good at the sport your playing, brave and believing.
These characteristics are the same because you always have to believe. And, you should also be brave because you have to be brave to do what you do.
How they are different is that the Paralympions have a dissability so they don't really have to be good att the sport your playing.
The events I would like to watch would be swimming and archery becaus i think it would be interesting to see how the Paralympions would play those sports.

  28. Paralympics
In the Paralympics I believe all competitors would need to have a good attitude. With their disabilities it is easy to look on the down side. With their disabilities they would need character traits such as, courage because they have a disability and the need to stay strong to go out in front of the world and compete. There character traits are different from regular Olympians because they have a disability. To the regular Olympians the sport they participate in might come easy to them. In the Paralympics they have to train really hard and get used to having a disability. If I were to watch the Paralympics I would watch Swimming because I am interested in how they swim and because I love to swim. I would also watch archery because I think it is a neat sport. In the Paralympics all contestant have overcome a disability but that makes them the best contestants.
